Bina's Hawaiian Hula Workshop

  • Josie's International School of Dance 26 Broadway Hawthorne, NY, 10532 United States (map)

This workshop will introduce you to the natural beauty of Hula dance that you will find extremely rewarding!  Our experienced instructor takes you on a marvelous journey from the Old World to the New!

Hula is a dance form that was developed in the Hawaiian Islands by the Polynesians who originally settled there. The hula tells the stories of creation and stories about it's people through dance, chants and traditional instruments.  For example, simple hand motions signify aspects of nature, such as the swaying of a tree in the breeze or a wave in the ocean, or a feeling or emotion, such as fondness or yearning.

Every workshop consists of an extensive warm-up in a traditional Hula circle (sitting and then standing) followed by hand gestures and foot technique.  In only one workshop dancers learn their first greeting dance known as the "Kawika" which is one of the original Old World dances.  Future workshops cover more modern dances (Elivs' Blue Hawaii) and use of instruments (Oolie Oolies).

Hear what students are saying about Bina's Hawaiian Hula workshops:
"Thank you so much for running the Hawaiian workshops with Bina!  I've always loved Polynesian dance.  It is so beautiful and the music just takes me away to a peaceful  state of mind. I can't wait until the next workshop!"
"Bina is a dedicated, knowledgeable and passionate instructor.  She had beginning students dancing an actual Hula dance within one hour!  The Hula is a wonderful way to connect with mother nature."
